The Brief
The Pandemic PACT team collect, curate, code and analyse data, in alignment with WHO priority diseases and other selected diseases, including Pandemic Influenza, Mpox and Plague.
The project was commissioned and led by the pandemic research team at the University of Oxford but also involved partnership with the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, Glopid-R, UKCDR and the Pandemic Sciences Institute.
The brief required the winning bidder to design, develop, host and maintain a website that could ingest the data related to grant funding tracking and present it in a variety of interactive visualisations to highlight gaps in research funding.
The site had to be aesthetically pleasing and easy to use from both a UX and UI perspective but also very flexible so that we could react quickly to needs of the Pandemic PACT team when presenting an expanding dataset in a range of formats.
What we did
We designed and built a website that brings together two things: the Pandemic PACT team’s own pages, which they edit themselves in Craft CMS, and an interactive data platform that turns their research datasets into charts, maps and searchable records.
What launched in March 2024 as a research funding tracker has grown, through continuous development since, into a much broader research platform. It now covers more than 30,000 research grants worth $33 billion from 378 funders, along with 1,295 registered clinical trials.
Whenever the team publish a new data release, the site automatically processes it, links each grant to the research papers it produced, and updates every chart, search result and download.
Visitors can filter the whole dataset by disease, funder, region and more, and every chart updates to match. Any chart can be saved as an image, any filtered data downloaded as a spreadsheet, and any view shared as a link. A search tool lets researchers find individual grants and trials, each with its own page.
Because the brief asked for a site that could respond quickly to outbreaks, we’ve added dedicated views as new priorities emerged, including Mpox, Marburg, the 100 Days Mission and Pandemic Intelligence.
Since launching the site it’s received a great deal of praise for the attractive design and the depth of insight and interactivity the visualisations provide to the academic and research communities.
